 As a music lover, there’s something uniquely compelling about a book that offers an insider’s view of the music world. Sylvia Patterson’s I’m Not with the Band: A Writer’s Life Lost in Music (published in 2017) is just that – a memoir that takes us behind the scenes of the music industry, seen through the eyes of a journalist who spent decades immersed in it. What I didn’t expect, though, was how timeless Patterson’s reflections would feel, especially in the final chapter. The book is a fascinating blend of personal anecdotes, industry insights, and, of course, a love for music. It’s a nostalgic and raw look at a career that has seen its ups and downs, both professionally and personally. While Patterson writes about her experiences with various artists, her wit and honesty shine through. But it’s the last chapter that really resonated with me.
